Harry W. Lawton was born in Long Beach, CA on December 11, 1927. He was a writer, journalist, editor, historian, and a lecturer at the University of California, Riverside. He is best known for his book, Willie Boy: A Desert Manhunt and for contributing to the preservation of California history. Willie Boy (Chemehuevi) lived during the late 19th and early 20th century. He became well-known through sensational media portrayals of the "last Western manhunt." After he was involved in the 1909 death of Chemehuevi leader William Mike, Willie Boy was pursued by a sheriff’s posse across the Mojave Desert and Coachella Valley of Southern California.
